6 Ways Teachers Can Make Extra Money Online

Uncategorized Mar 14, 2023

As teachers, we know we love what we do.

We work hard, we are constantly learning new things and adapting to change.

We are always busy, #TeacherTired, and wish we made more money.

Unfortunately, the school districts are not going to be paying us more anytime soon, so many teachers are taking matters into their own hands by getting to teacher side hustles and even starting teaching businesses on the side.

Before you say that you don't have any worthy skills to monetize online as an educator-- stop and check out some of these options. Before the end of this blog, I'm thinking you may reconsider and realize you do have skills that you can transfer into cash money! To help get your ideas flowing, be sure to grab my Free Teacherpreneur Income Guide!

Here's my top 6 ways teachers can make extra money online (while still working full time).

  1. Tutoring is a popular and flexible option for teachers looking to make extra money. With platforms like TutorMe and Chegg, you can tutor students online and put your teaching skills to work. And if you're feeling entrepreneurial, creating your own tutoring website can help you reach a wider audience and earn even more. You can use social media platforms like TikTok, Instagram, and Facebook to find clients.
  2.  Selling your educational resources on platforms like Teachers Pay Teachers, Etsy, or Amazon is a great way to monetize the materials you've already created. Why not share your lesson plans, worksheets, and other resources with other teachers while earning extra cash? If you take a look in your Google Drive, there's tons of resources that are already created, all you have to do is get them listed and start enjoying the passive income.
  3.  Freelance writing is another option for teachers with a knack for the written word. You can write for education-focused websites or companies, or start your own blog and monetize it through advertising and affiliate marketing.
  4.  If you have a sharp eye for detail, scoring tests and grading essays can be a flexible and lucrative side hustle. Companies like Pearson, ETS, and Measurement Inc. hire teachers to work remotely and grade exams from home. I've never personally scored tests, but I have written courses for Texas A&M! You never know what kinds of jobs we can squeeze into simply by updating our resume and applying for freelance jobs.
  5.  Creating digital courses on platforms like Udemy or Skillshare is a great way to share your expertise and earn passive income. You can teach anything from science to history to music, and create courses that students can access anytime, anywhere. You also have the ability to teach fellow teachers how to do something you're an expert at: behavior management, project based learning, standards based grading, reading strategies, the list is endless!
  6. Finally, offering consulting services is a great way to monetize your expertise in a particular area. Whether you specialize in curriculum development, classroom management, or educational technology, you can market your services through your website or platforms like LinkedIn.

I won't lie and say that balancing these side hustles with your teaching responsibilities won't be challenging-- but it is possible! I'm still working full time, parenting to 5 littles ones, and running my business which consist of resource creation and subscription, memberships and coaching, social media content creation, and some brand deal work.

I will say, teachers are pretty good at juggling responsibilities (I think that is literally second nature to us thanks to dealing with children all day) and with careful planning and time management, running a successful side hustle is so possible!

Do not let fear stop you from exploring your talents outside of the classroom and generating extra income to help you live your best life.

Cheers,
Ty Tiger
